ADDITIONAL APPLICATION
PROCEDURES
-
If you need advice
on how to apply stain to wood, we've compiled some tips for a house
stain or deck application. Before you apply stain to wood, especially
an additional application, make sure all equipment is in good working
order and "think safety first." PREFERRED
APPLICATION TOOLS (All equipment must be in good working order)
Tips for house
stain or deck application:
Airless
sprayer with 6-16 to a 6-25 tip, at 2000 psi. Conventional sprayer
with 704/fx tip, 40-60 psi,F/P at 10-20 psi.
When using
a sprayer, a respirator must be worn (NOISH/MSHA TC 23C type), and/or
eye goggles, and/or a face shield.
Roller-(9",
3/4 nap length lambswool-DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC) Rough sawn wood
Roller-(9",
3/8 nap length lambswool-DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC) Smooth wood
Brush (Natural
bristle) Standard wall brush-4 to 6 inches wide
Dipping
(wipe recommended by brush to remove excess)
APPLICATION
House Stain or Deck Stain TECHNIQUES:
SPRAYERS: Pass nozzle
about 12 inches from the surface in straight short wipes. DO NOT use equipment
which atomizes or vaporizes Men-Wood.
Use an airless type sprayer. WHEN SPRAYING YOU MUST FOLLOW UP WITH BACK
BRUSHING!!! BRUSHING: Apply Men-Wood
in a straight line and return over the same area in one continuous back
and forth motion to pick up excess-and APPLY TO FULL LENGTH OF LOG OR BOARD.
ROLLERS: Where dark lines are created by the ends of the roller, back
roll it immediately. Men-Wood
should be applied on the vertical surfaces from the top down, with no cascading
of the product. Be sure to apply Men-Wood
horizontally or vertically (depending on how the logs or boards run).
APPLICATION SUGGESTIONS
AND LIMITATIONS
- Remember that
Men-Wood products
should be applied with a wet on wet application using sufficient material
so that the surface remains wet for only a short time before penetration
into the substrate. Surface residues, pools and puddles of applied Men-Wood
should be removed by backrolling or brushing until the Men-Wood
completely covers the surface. Failure to do so may result in blotching
and/or a glistening appearance.
- When spraying,
be sure to mask off glass, plastic, and metal. Protect plants, grass
and other materials by shielding or covering.
- Clean Up: Men-Wood
cleans up easily with paint thinner or mineral spirits. CAUTION:
PROPERLY DISPOSE OF RAGS SATURATED WITH FINISH AS THEY ARE SUSCEPTIBLE
TO SPONTANEOUS IGNITION. (Dispose of rags in a water-filled container).
- DO NOT APPLY
ON DIRTY, WET OR GLAZED SURFACES!!!
- First apply
ULTRA-KLEEN with a garden sprayer type applicator for removal of dirt,
oil, mill glaze, etc. from the surface. Let the solution work for 15
to 20 minutes. Power wash thoroughly with clean water and allow to dry.
Dark stains will have to be removed by using ULTRA-KLEEN. After applying,
use a stiff bristle brush to clean the area and power wash down. Allow
to dry 48 hours without rainfall. This process will clean the substrate,
open the wood pores, and ensure good adhesion. Use power washer at 500psi
to start. Increase psi as needed for additional cleaning action on substrate.
- If logs are
green, have been dip treated with any Timbor or CCA, or have a moisture
content in excess of 18%, use Log Keeper!! A drying period of six months
is required before finishing with Men-Wood.
- After cleaning
use our PREMIUM GRADE CAULKING, Log Builder, or Conceal. CAULKING
MUST BE APPLIED BEFORE COATING WITH Men-Wood.
This should be applied to all cracks more than 1/16 " wide.
- Before applying
Men-Wood
to treated wood, be sure that the wood has aged for a period of 60 to
90 days. Be particularly cautious when working with cedar, pine, redwood
or mahogany-as these woods may take 6 months to dry suitably. MOISTURE
CONTENT MUST BE 18% BEFORE APPLYING Men-Wood
TO ANY SUBSTRATE!! You must use a moisture meter with 2" probes for
logs.
- You can use
Men-Wood
on horizontal surfaces-like decks and walkways.
- Always stir
and shake the container before use. This will make the color uniform.
Also be sure to stir it often during use as the pigment has a tendency
to settle. If more than one pail is used, BLEND from one to another
to keep the color uniform. Pigment colors are NOT pre-mixed
- Reseal all
partially used containers immediately and completely!! You can lay lid
loose on top of the container while using the product. Make sure it
is sealed airtight when done. Use a rubber mallet to secure lid if necessary.
Shelf life unopened 1 to 1-1/2 years, opened 6 months to 1 year.
If storing, relieve lid pressure by drilling a 1/8 hole in
the center of the lid and cover with a piece of masking tape to relieve
pressure buildup. If this process is not done your pail will crack open.
- Do not add
solvents, catalysts, curing agents, or any other material to Men-Wood.
NEVER THIN Men-Wood!!!
- Insecticide
can be added if you live in high bug infested areas like the Midwest
& Southeastern USA.
- Do not apply
Men-Wood
during inclement weather or when the ambient temperature is above 95
degrees. For best results, apply at temperatures above 45 degrees. Avoid
frost, fog, and extreme damp conditions.
- DO NOT USE
over a solid colored stain, latex stain or paint. Men-Wood
can be used if old stains and paints are stripped clean.
- Men-Wood
can take 36 hours to set up an initial water barrier. For best results
do not subject Men-Wood
to rain or high water pressure during this time.
- To prevent
lap marks, avoid application in direct sunlight or on a hot moist surface.
- If storing,
relieve lid pressure by drilling a 1/8 hole in the center of the
lid and cover with a piece of masking tape to relieve pressure. If this
process is not done your pail will crack open.
CAUTION: DO NOT
USE THIS PRODUCT INDOORS OR IN OTHER CONFINED AREAS WITH POOR VENTILATION!!
Railings: Requires
2 coats and a maintenance coat each year. Siding: Read our Technical Bulletin
#S091295 on installation and care. Cedar shingles or split shakes:
Apply one coat by dipping or spraying. Requires a maintenance coat every
4 years. No warranty on roofs.
