WET ON WET VERTICAL APPLICATION GUIDELINES

EXTERIOR USE ONLY
Please read all application guidelines below before applying stain
Pigment colors are NOT pre-mixed
SURFACE PREPARATION: Surface must be clean, dry and free of all dirt, wax, grease, soot, loose or peeling stains, paint, mold and/or mildew. Mold and mildew must be killed with a bleach, TSP, water solution (call for mix). Prior to cleaning check the logs/wood with a moisture meter (at the center lower edge on logs) *Reading must be 18% or lower (cedar/redwood/cypress should be 12% or less moisture). Test at least 2 or 3 pieces of wood per each side of your building project. If reading is higher than 18% wait 60 days and test again, if reading is at 18% or lower then test with a few drops of water. If water is absorbed rapidly, the surface is ready for product application; if not, wait 2 weeks and test again. Failure to do these tests will not allow Men-Wood™ 200 to penetrate the substrate and protect the wood. Prior to applying Men-Wood™ 200 Natural Oil Finish, clean & condition surfaces with ULTRA-KLEEN and/or Ultra-Brite wood cleaners & brighteners. All redwood and cedar woods need to be cleaned with Oxalic Acid (Ultra-Brite) to neutralize tannin oils before applying Men-Wood™ 200. Cleaning & conditioning will break the mill glaze and improve the penetration of the product. The glossy (glaze-like) areas reduce coating penetration and adhesion, not allowing the substrate to absorb the solids for UV protection. This can cause premature discoloration of surface, and surface may become tacky which will cause mildew! A power washer is needed to wash off cleaners PSI 1500. Follow label directions when using cleaning solutions. Cleaning will also aid in breaking the mill glaze on new, planed or smooth logs, and allows 20% better penetration of Men-Wood™ 200. Be sure logs are thoroughly dry (at least 6-7 warm and windy days) before coating with Men-Wood™ 200.
PRE-TREATMENTS: Tim-Bor or Bora-Care can be applied before coating with Men-Wood™ 200 and should cure for about 2 weeks before applying Men-Wood™ 200. For best results Caulking & Chinking should be applied before coating with Men-Wood™ 200 but you can apply after (allow coating to penetrate 2 weeks before application of caulk or chink). Do not pre-treat wood with a water repellent or preservative where ever Men-Wood™ 200 is to be applied. NOTE: IN VERY DAMP OR HUMID CLIMATES, ADDITIONAL MILDEWCIDE IS RECOMMENDED.
APPLICATION: (Read surface preparation again, if needed) Once surface is ready after preparation, allow 6-7 days drying time after power washing, applying wood cleaners or heavy rains! This finish has been used with success over penetrating natural finishes that have weathered until they need renewal. Maximum performance requires good penetration. Test with a drop of water to see if absorption is adequate. Old varnish, sealers and paint films must be completely removed before applying the finish. The finish can be applied by brush, roller, or spray equipment. Brushing, however, improves penetration and uniformity in appearance. The finish should be stirred frequently during application to maintain uniform suspension of the iron oxides. To prevent lap marks, avoid application in direct sunlight and brush with the grain of the wood for the full length of the board course of log or siding. Having the entire surface in the shade will also make a more uniform coating and prevent uneven penetration problems due to variation in surface temperature. When spray applications are used, back brushing is required to give the best uniformity and durability. For siding application coat the back of siding and the edges and ends with Men-Wood™ 200 before being nailed to surface. Then do the wet on wet application. Deck application should be a one coat application and then recoat as necessary. NOTE: FOR BEST RESULTS AND OPTIMAL PENETRATION: APPLY TO DRY WOOD. DO NOT APPLY IF RAIN IS IMMINENTLY FORECASTED. BOTH SURFACE AND AIR TEMPERATURE SHOULD BE ABOVE 50 DEGREES or HIGHER FOR THE BEST RESULTS.
APPLIED SURFACES: Ideal for exterior smooth or rough sawn wood, new or weathered wood, logs, plywood, shingles, roofs, doors, exterior trim, siding, fences and other unpainted/unsealed wood surfaces. If pre-treating with Tim-Bor or Bora-Care it must be applied before coating with Men-Wood™ 200 and should cure for about 2 weeks before coating. For best results Caulking & Chinking should be applied before coating with Men-Wood™ 200 but you can apply after (allow coating to penetrate 2 weeks before application of caulk or chink). Do not apply Men-Wood™ 200 to surfaces you intend to paint, as there will not be good adhesion. Retrofit applications will require more preparation, as existing stains or sealants will need to be stripped and power washed away. Any stains or marks will show through on wood with semi-transparent coatings. On weathered and retrofit applications a light pigmentation is recommended to blend the imperfections naturally.
SURFACE TEMPERATURE: As always, good staining procedures should be followed. Surface temperature and air temperatures should be above 50 -F and should be under 95 -F. Avoid frost, fog, high humidity and damp conditions, as this could cause penetration problems.
PENETRATION OF Men-Wood™ 200: The most important application tip to remember is preparing the wood properly as described above. Men-Wood™ 200 should be applied with a two coat process (Vertical surfaces only. Deck application should be a one coat application and then recoat as necessary) to assure maximum protection. *Apply "Men-Wood™ 200 " WET ON WET (apply one coat and then within 1/2 hr to 2 hrs apply the second coat) Do not allow first coat to dry before applying the second coat. The second coat will go on quickly and require much less product, while more effectively covering application errors. Do not allow any product to stand on top of the substrate - work in with a dry brush if necessary. Any excess stain not absorbed in 30 minutes should be brushed in. (Do not over coat) NOTE: NEVER ALLOW STAIN TO PUDDLE ON SURFACE AND DRY.
DRYING TIME: Men-Wood™ 200 dries rather slowly, although it will appear to be dry due to penetration. A day of good drying weather is required. Do not apply if rain is expected within 24 hours! Due to rain Men-Wood™ 200 can wash off and cause premature discoloration of the substrate. Men-Wood™ 200 will never completely harden and this is why its solids last so long and protect so well.
MAINTENANCE: To prolong the life and beauty of your finish clean annually. Mold Blaster is a professional cleaning solution designed to help sealers and finishes maintain their beauty.
